with the petraeus sex scandal that threatens to spin out of control less than one week after president obama's re-election. big questions tonight. what did the white house know and when did it know it. the four-star general has said to be devastated about the scandal, sparked by his affair with his biographer, paula broadwell, uncovered during an fbi investigation. the bureau was looking into so-called jealous e-mails purchase reportedly send by broadwell to kelley, a petraeus family friend. tonight, the "washington post" has reported that as president obama rearranges his national security team, it is considering asking senator john kerry to serve on the team and the fbi agent was barred from taking part in the case for allegedly sending shirtless pictures of himself to a woman involved in the case. meanwhile, the ghost writer of broadwell's book, vernon loeb, says he was clueless about the affair between petraeus and broadwell. here with the latest on the scandal that keeps getting bigger and more bizarre, cnn's pentagon correspondent barbara starr and intelligence correspondent, suzanne kelly. welcome

obama and democrats won that election. really president obama won it big. it's relevant in this case largely because he ran on an explicit agenda of having tax rates for the wealthy go back up. that's what this negotiation largely, not exclusively, but largely is all about. so president obama's coming to the table saying, hey, republicans we didn't reach an agreement with the super committee. we didn't reach an agreement with the biden talks. we didn't reach agreement largely with debt limit fights from those years ago. i just won. i ran on that. so this is my hard position. another thing has changed in addition to the election. it is the fiscal cliff that you mentioned in the set-up there. we are now much closer to the deadline of those bush era tax cuts going up. and the leverage has now changed. if there is no agreement at all by december 31, all of those rates go up. that fundamentally changes the debate over who can vote for a tax increase and when. one of the kujals being put forward by a lot of liberals on the hill -- there's a little bit of good cop bad cop going on. you hear
in this election. they made a big gamble and came up empty handed. in 2011 president obama was cutting deals with john boehner on the golf course. it was very favorable for the republicans. the president agreed to more than a trillion dollars in cuts, benefit reductions of social security, raising the medicare eligibility age and actually lowering tax rates on the wealthiest americans. now in the end, republicans, what do they do? they rejected the deal. they wanted more and the way to get it was to beat the president of the united states in november. the president fought back almost a year ago. he announced the message of the reelection campaign. the same place where teddy roosevelt gave birth to progressivism. >> we have to ask ourselves, do we want to make the investments we need in things like education and research and high-tech manufacturing, all those things that help make us an economic super power, or do we want to keep in place the tax breaks for the the wealthiest americans in our country? because we can't afford to do both. that's not politics. that's just math. >> this message w

acts of war that the obama administration worked to keep secret until after the election. on friday, three days after, we learn that david petraeus, the head of the cia, was stepping down because of an extramarital affair. first i want to say that david petraeus is one of a greatest genuine hero. he is the first general in generations to turn around a war america was losing to iraq and 2006 and 2007 and he helped divert defeat. and for general petraeus to do what he did when he was director of the central intelligence agency, it was triple problem inmatic and opened him up to blackmail. for people who say it's a private matter, you are simply wrong. you can't have the cia director of america involved in a fair. once the affair was revealed, there was not a question in petraeus's mind that he needed to resign. but the story doesn't simply end there. now the white house claims that the president first received information about the affair on thursday. but a source close to journallest ron kessler, who will join me in a few minutes, says that's highly unlikely, and here's why. way back
